About the course

Course content

There will be given introductions to central theories on learning, development, motivation and self-concept. Within the previously mentioned areas emphasis will be placed on the understanding of concepts and the connection between the various concepts. Emphasis will be put on understanding the significance different learning environments have for learning, development, motivation and self-concept. The students will be given an overview of central conditions for learning and development, and questions about how the learning environment can stimulate those conditions will be discussed.


The course is obligatory in order to achieve full specialization in education studies.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is to provide insight into topics that are important in understanding and adjusting learning and development in children, adolescents and adults.

The students shall acquire knowledge on:
- Central theories on learning.
- Central theories on children’s and adolescents’ cognitive, language, social, emotional, physical, motor and moral development.
- Central theories on motivation and self-perception.
- The role the environment has in regard to the adjustment of development and learning.

The students shall develop skills in:
- using the knowledge on practical and theoretical problems.
- evaluate the theories critically.
- sharing the knowledge.

Learning methods and activities

4 hours of lectures per week, 2 hours of seminar per week. 2 out of 3 written assignments must be approved to qualify for the exam in this course.
Form of assessment: 6-hour individual, written exam.
