Course content
The study provides an overview of topics, conditions, theory, models, and skills in counseling work related to hearing impairments. The content is organized into the following topics: Counseling, counseling theories and counseling techniques; Assessment and investigation in audiopedagogical work; Counseling work related to audiopedagogical issues in various settings; Meetings with parents and guardians; Conversations with children; Informed choices.

Educators or others with relevant education who wish to specialize within the audiopedagogical field.

Knowledge:
Students:
- have in-depth knowledge of counseling, counseling theories, and counseling techniques

- can plan and carry out counseling work related to audiopedagogical issues
- can apply audiopedagogical knowledge in the counseling process
- can use observation and, if necessary, other assessments as a basis for intervention-oriented audiopedagogical counseling

General competence:
- can apply their knowledge, skills, and theories to carry out and reflect on counseling as a growth-promoting process in audiopedagogical contexts.
Learning methods and activities
- Lectures and seminars during 3 study gatherings, each lasting 3-5 days
- Online lectures
- Practical training equivalent to 2 weeks, including preparatory and follow-up work, some of which is connected to work during the gatherings
Detailed description of practical training:
Practical training equivalent to 2 weeks, including preparatory and follow-up work, some of which is connected to work during the gatherings. The practical training should be related to an audiopedagogical issue and should include counseling, observation, and possibly other forms of assessment. The practical training is carried out in a kindergarten, school, in connection with a PPT service, or at a workplace. Guidance is provided by Statped.
Practical period 1 - Counseling session, observation, and possibly other assessmentThe scope of this practical period is stipulated to one week, including preparatory and follow-up work. The period includes a conversation with the client(s) to map the context and needs. Guidance is provided on a video recording of the conversation and a reflection note. Afterwards, observation and possibly other relevant assessment are carried out.
Practical period 2 - Counseling sessionThe scope is stipulated to one week, including preparatory and follow-up work. During this period, students will conduct the second counseling session. Session 2 focuses on audiopedagogical measures and is based on the assessment from session 1 as well as observation and assessment. In the conversation, observations and other assessments from the observation practice should be used as a basis. Guidance is provided on the recording of the conversation along with a reflection note. Counseling session 2 and the associated reflection note are assessed as approved/not approved. The recording from counseling session 2 will be assessed as approved/not approved. If it is not approved, the student will have the opportunity to make a new video recording.

Further on evaluation
Three days individual home exam. Scope: up to 5,000 words, excluding cover page, table of contents, and reference list.
Practical training is assessed as Approved/Not approved. Approved practical training is a prerequisite for taking the exam.
Special conditions:
Mandatory activities from previous semesters may be approved by the department.

Required previous knowledge
Target group:
Teachers or others with relevant education who wish to specialize within the field of audiopedagogy.
Admission requirements/prerequisites:
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences with a specialization in pedagogy,
- or completion of the first three years of general teacher/early childhood teacher education,
- or a bachelor’s degree and a one-year practical-pedagogical education,
- or another three-year education with a minimum of 30 ECTS credits in pedagogy. All applicants must have completed PED6648 Introduction to Audiopedagogy and PED6640 Hearing Impairments - Language, Communication and Language Environment (replaces PED6644 and PED6649)
