Course content

Target Group

The course is primarily aimed at individuals who wish to acquire formal competence in visual impairment education for work in the education sector.

Course Content

The course covers educational adaptations for the use of assistive and learning technology in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, and adult education. (Assistive) technology is constantly and rapidly evolving. Therefore, the course emphasizes that students should acquire a fundamental understanding of the technology and develop skills that remain relevant even as technology changes.

Key topics in the course:

• Use of assistive devices and smart technology

• Educational adaptation and instruction in the use of learning technology

• Use of audiobooks and digital textbooks• Coding/programming in schools• Adaptation and use of MS Windows, Mac OS, and Chrome OS

Independence and inclusive practices are recurring themes throughout this course. The course also addresses issues related to adaptation for individuals with complex needs.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - The student has

  • knowledge about the use of assistive technology in various educational settings,
  • knowledge about the possibilities for using general educational technology and smart technology.

Skills - The students can

  • critically assess learning technologies and adapt their use for individuals with visual impairments in different age groups,
  • provide individual-level advice on compensatory techniques when using learning technology,
  • adapt teaching plans for individuals with visual impairments where digital aids and resources are central​

General competence - The student can

  • The students are able to communicate about issues related to education and the adaptation of learning technology for children, adolescents, and adults with visual impairments.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Special Education (MPRSPED)

Required previous knowledge

Passed exam in PED6690 Introduction to Visual Impairment Education.
