About the course
Course content
The course deals with money and monetary policy and currency - nationally and internationally. Both theory and practice are covered. The course will give a theoretical review of the origin of money, the relationship between interest rent and exchange rate, and various factors that affect the exchange rate of a country's currency. We will also cover the relationship between monetary policy and the state's fundamental goals.
The importance of monetary policy for macroeconomic stabilization is also reviewed, based on experiences in Norway. Furthermore, the structure and function of some selected international currency markets are covered, as well as the importance of these markets for Norway.
Learning outcome
Knowledge - the student shall:
- acquire basic and general knowledge about money and monetary policy, including corresponding specific knowledge about Norway
- develop knowledge of important theoretical approaches in order to understand developments in interest rate and currency market
- become familiar with the main types of monetary and exchange rate regimes internationally
Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:
- understand and apply central communication from authorities in this field
- understand the use of interest rate and currency markets for some private and government actors
- identify dilemmas and trade-offs related to challenges and current policies
Learning methods and activities
Lectures/seminars for 2 hours a week throughout the semester and supervision of the term paper. There will be given a prompt for the compulsory assignment, which can be written individually or together with 1-2 others. For elective courses in the specialization in Political Science, the following applies: If fewer than 10 students attend the course during the first two weeks of teaching, the course will be offered as an individual study course with supervision.
