Course content

The course discusses theory and empiricism about the implementation and evaluation of public policy. Emphasis will be put on the various approximation- and research methods that are applied to understand the content and results of these policies. The theory and methodology used will be of an international character, whilst the practical examples will mainly be Norwegian. The course aims to provide candidates with basic qualifications in practical implementation- and evaluation studies. The essay will be within this framework.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the student shall:

  • be in the forefront of knowledge about policy-design, instruments and implementation in the field of public policy and have a command of the area's theory and methods
  • have knowledge of the methods for evaluating public policy measures and programs

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • treat one of the themes which was discussed in instruction in an independent empirical analytical manner at an internationally high level

Learning methods and activities

Lectures/group discussions. Supervision of term paper. The essay is to be an independent discussion of a topic taught in lectures, and is to consist of 20 pages. If 6 or fewer students sign up for a planned course during the first 2 teaching weeks, the course will be offered as an instructed reading course.

Required previous knowledge

Master's degree in Political Science or equivalent
