About
About the course
Course content
This course is part of the full-time, post graduate teacher training programme (PPU). Alongside courses in pedagogy and practice, it will enable the candidate to serve as a teacher from year 5 to year 13. Guided practice is an integrated part of the programme. The course covers all aspects of teaching and students' learning within the subjects. Learning consists of both cognitive and affective factors, such as motivation, attitudes, identity and emotions. The course provides a basis for planning, implementing, assessing and reflecting upon teaching, based on research- and experience-based knowledge and theory. The learning aims for this course also include being able to analyse and see connections between a variety of perspectives, theories and research studies. Knowledge and insight into subject-didactic theory and research provides the competence needed to improve own practice and the school's activities, and to carry out systematic research and development work in school.

Learning methods and activities
Subject didactics in teacher education spans two semesters. To achieve the objectives of the course, interaction between disciplinary and pedagogical competence, teaching experience, and the acquisition of subject didactic theories and concepts is required. This also involves further reflection on one’s own teaching practice and collaboration with the field of practice. Students gain experience with varied teaching and working methods, as well as different learning arenas. There will be an alternation between teaching in larger and smaller groups.
Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity, including through the implementation of a group-based R&D project. The R&D project is carried out within the subject didactics course that belongs to the student’s first subject area.
All mandatory activities must be approved before the candidate can sit for the exam. NTNU has a certification responsibility to ensure that students master the areas fundamental to their future professional practice. Therefore, 75% attendance in teaching is required. It is crucial that students develop into independent and responsible teachers and that they are able to collaborate with their fellow students and future colleagues. Individual effort is not only important for one’s own learning but also for the professional development of colleagues.
Compulsory assignments
- Semester assignment for guideance
- Defined coursework
- 75% participation in teaching
- Courseworks for guideance
Further on evaluation
Defined work requirements are prepared in each subject didactics and made available to the students at the start of the semester. For students with two teaching subjects, the student chooses one of these as subject 1. Defined coursework requirements also consist of activities and supervision related to R&D work in the student's subject 1.
Assessment of the compulsory activity "Courseworks for guideance" and final assessment of the assessment part "Courseworks" takes place in the autumn semester. Assessment of the compulsory activity " Semester assignment for guideance" and final assessment of the assessment part "Semester assignment" will be carried out in the spring semester. For a detailed description of the assessment in the course, see the study and teaching plan and a separate document describing the R&D work.
A student who has not passed the course due to failing one of the sub-assessments only needs to submit for a new assessment in the part the student has failed. If the sub-assessments "Coursework" and "Semester assignment" fail, these can be submitted in an improved version one more time. When retaking a passed exam, a completely new submission must be delivered. The course consists of two-part assessments, and the student(s) can appeal only when both partial grades in the course have been announced. The student must state which sub-assessment(s) the appeal concerns.
The assessment paper can be written in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
