About the course
Course content
- Identify normal sonographic anatomy and common anatomical variations of the upper extremity.
- Acquire and present high-quality ultrasound images of normal anatomy to support understanding of pathological conditions and guide decisions on further treatment options.
- Understand the legal framework and ethical principles related to responsibility for conducting examinations and interpreting results.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
The student should be able to:
- Explain the anatomy and sonographic representation of anatomical structures, including commonly occurring normal variations in the upper extremity.
- Discuss the relationship between the ultrasound image and underlying physiology.
- Evaluate which diseases and conditions of the upper extremity can be diagnosed using ultrasound.
- Analyze their own image acquisition and explain causes of poor image quality and artifacts.
- Describe relevant differential diagnoses and other suitable imaging modalities.
Skills
The student should be able to:
- Produce high-quality ultrasound images of normal anatomy.
- Recognize and describe normal sonographic anatomy of the upper extremity.
- Differentiate normal anatomy from pathological findings.
General Competence
The student should be able to:
- Conduct literature searches and write assignments in the form of reports according to scientific guidelines.
- Master the terminology and communication forms of the discipline.
- Develop and evaluate their own protocols and routines against updated research and/or national and international guidelines.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, mandatory assignments, practical exercises, guidance, and workshops conducted on campus and via an online platform.

All mandatory activities must be approved for the student to be eligible to take the exam.
Mandatory activities are generally valid for one calendar year, but the department may grant exceptions upon application and review.
Examination
- Practical oral examination.
- Registration for assessment requires approved course registration in the same semester.
- Deferred examinations are held for candidates with valid absence or a result of "not passed."
