About the course

Course content

Many pressing problems of the world find explanation in different forms of inequality. In this course, we trace inequality across time and space in new ways and within a context of cross-cultural and comparative perspectives. You will learn about current social issues relating to various forms of inequality, approached through anthropological theory and empirical studies. The topics are related to ongoing studies in the Anthropologies of Sustainability research group.

Examples include issues relating to modernization, urbanization, gender and human rights, neoliberalism, ethnicity, climate and environment.

Learning outcome

A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

  • has knowledge of theories on global inequalities.
  • has insight into how to assess theories based on empirical studies

Skills

  • can describe perspectives and theories regarding global inequalities.
  • can choose theories strategically to analyse a current issue.

General competence

  • have consciousness about the social and political significance of inequality for the affected people and for our global community.
  • can critically assess inequality from the point of view of the weak.
  • have Ability to see unequal relations from community and scholarly perspectives.

Further on evaluation

The examination consists of a 4-hour written exam. The exam can be written in Norwegian, English or another Scandinavian language.

The compulsory activity in this course is an oral presentation, and at least 60% participation at classes. Information about the compulsory activities in this course will be available in Blackboard at the beginning of the semester. In order to be qualified for the exam, the compulsory activity has to be approved.

Retake exam

It is possible to retake the exam. The examination is offered both semesters. The mandatory activities can only be taken in the semester the course is taught, so in order to retake the exam at a different semester, your assignments must be approved.
