Course content

Perspectives are based on the human rights declaration and judicial, political, social and religious as mentioned in UN's aim for sustainability. The course focus on theorizing different vulnerable positions regarding citizen's rights, problems regarding user participation, social cohesion and integration and participation as equal citizen. Cocreation and how to increase capabilities, user involvement, equality, citizenship and social integration are core themes.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - Students:

  • have advanced knowledge on citizenship discourse related to values and rights
  • have advanced knowledge on forms of user involvement in different social and historical contexts
  • have advanced knowledge about ethical challenges related to user involvement
  • have advanced knowledge in the field of knowledge production and research relevant for social work and similar fields of research.

Skills - Students:

  • can analyse and carry out independent work on contextualized interpretations of user involvement and citizenship
  • can analyse and deal critically with different perspectives on user involvement and citizenship

General knowledge - Students:

  • can make written analysis of relevant social science questions related to user involvement and citizenship.

Lectures, seminars, students` own presentations and groups.

Compulsory assignments

Essay based on 1 week homework (same in case of ordinary as well as delayed exam). Compulsary activity is an oral presentation, and this must be passed in order to have the final exam. Grades: A-F.

Compulsory activity must be approved in order to take the final exam in the course. The compulsory activities are approved for 4 years. If more than four years have passed since the approved compulsory activity, the student must carry out compulsory activities again in order to take the exam.

Required previous knowledge

Bachelor in social work, child welfare work, social education programme or similar degree. The course is compulsory for students who are admitted to the master's program in social work. The course is offered as an elective course in the education plan for students in other master's programs at the Department of Social Work. Students admitted to nearby master's programs can be admitted after individual assessment.
