Course content
The course intends to provide a basic introduction to various offshore structures, such as design installation, operation and maintenance. This includes both design criteria (environmental impacts, material selection, safety, etc.) and operational aspects. Topics will be adapted at all times to current issues from the ocean industries such as:
- Resources (food, energy, tourism ...)
- Environmental factors (please wind, wave current)
- The design process (functional requirements, safety requirements)
- Lifetime challenges related to fouling, corrosion, material selection, surface treatment etc.
- Dynamic conditions - maximum loads and fatigue
- Maritime operations (installation, operation, maintenance etc)
- Anchoring systems
- Operational analysis
Learning outcome
Knowledge: After completing the course the student should have knowledge of:
- The resources of the oceans, development, operation and maintenance carried out at sea
- what kind of environmental impact such installations are exposed to throughout their lifetime, and how it affects function, lifetime, access, etc.
- various maritime operations necessary in connection with such development at sea (e.g. installation, laying of cables / pipes, maintenance, relocation, etc.)
- various material properties and applications in such installations (dynamic properties, light weight, corrosion protection, etc.)
Skills: After completing the course the student should be able to:
- conduct design analysis and risk assessments related to the development of various constructions at sea
- conduct design, dimensioning and fabrication of various constructions and systems that are part of an offshore development
- communicate key theories and issues that are important for the development and operation of such installations
- make necessary estimation calculations of various installation methods (e.g. towing, lifting operations, anchoring, etc.)
- carry out simple cost analyzes
General competence: After completing the course the student must have:
- Acquired a professional basic knowledge and understanding in order to participate in the planning and implementation of interdisciplinary projects throughout the entire life cycle.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures , exercises and laboratory exercises.
At least ¾ of the assignments must be approved for admission to the examination.
Compulsory assignments
- Mandatory assignment
Further on evaluation
- Written Project report (40 %)
- Written exam(60%)
Both to be passed.
Resit exam: Oral
If the candidate fails the project report, this must be retaken during the next ordinary exam
The candidate is allowed to do a resit exam for the written part of the exam if he/she fails the ordinary exam or if his/her absence is valid. The resit exam will be an oral examination (duration approx. 20 minutes)
