About the course

Course content

Basic knowledge: dosage, strength and amount in medication calculation. the relationship between dosage, strength and amount. calculating with percentages. calculating with time. conversions Forms of medications and relevant calculations: calculations in relation to tablets, capsules etc. calculations in relation to mixtures etc. calculations in relation to injections and infusions. calculations in relation to adding medications to an intravenous solution. dilution of fluid medications.

Learning outcome

Læringsutbytte - Kunnskap:
- the content of the concepts; dose, strength, quantity
- how the active substance is specified in pharmaceuticals
- different formulations and what's a pharmaceutical unit
- how the dose is specified in the doctor's prescription of drug therapy. - how to perform self-monitoring in medication calculations

Læringsutbytte - Ferdigheter:
- Calculations with different specification of the active substance (g, mg, microgram, mmol and IE)
- Calculations where the strength of the drug is given as a percentage
- Calculations with quantity units or volume units
- Relevant conversions (the grammesystem, the litersystem, ml and drops, percentage and mg/ml)
- Calculations with time and time periods
- Calculations of percentage reduction or increase in dose or quantity
- Calculation of the dose, strength and quantity in relation to the solid and liquid drugs
- Calculation of the dose, strength and amount in relation to dilutions
- Calculation of injection and infusion rate (ml/min, ml/hr and drops/min)

Læringsutbytte - Kompetanse:
The students should:
- have an understanding of how the behave exactly in administrating medications
- documenting their own calculations in a reliable way
- perform self-monitoring of own calculations

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, tutorials, Fronter-based selftests and learning activities, problem-based seminar in groups.

The Examn is an "Individual written test" - duration 2 hours. The test must be passed in order for the student to be allowed to start the 4th semester

Access to the course is limited to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing program at NTNU in Aalesund.
