SMF3094 - Decision Analytics

Course content

The course has three modules:

Module 1 gives a short recap and deeper understanding in decision theory, elements of game theory, complex decisions- and choices for optimal portfolios - all based on uncertainty.

In module 2 the students will work with cases from different types of platform economy analyzing how they are organized, how to make profit and other structures of incentives in a network - and platform economy.

Module 3 focuses on big data as an important source for income and information, and will build understanding on how to develop strategies to gain insight and ability to carry out the benefit of big data.

To develop insight into the structure and logic on how digital platforms are build, the students will analyze a real case.

Learning outcome

The aim of this course is to develop a deeper understanding of decision processes in a digital economy. The course builds on the student's former knowledge in the fields of strategy and leadership, especially when it comes to theory on decision making.

Knowledge:

  • Good insight in an analytical approach to rational decision making in situations with uncertainty and possibly also conflicting goals
  • Have good knowledge on how organizations can optimize their decisions in a network economy
  • Understand the basic methods for decision making.
  • Good understanding on how big data plays an important role in strategic decisions.

Skills:

  • are able to use different methods and tools to secure optimized strategic decisions
  • are able to analyze and reflect on structures and value streams in digital platforms and networks.

General competence:

  • Understand and communicate big data as a central source in strategic decision making
  • Communicate orally and written on complexity and uncertainty in decision processes, and explain choice of methods and tools, to develop a good practice in decision making.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. Assignments and exercises in groups.

An important part of the course is to train the students in analyzing real life decision processes in organizations.
