About the course

Course content

The course will focus on the framework for cultural production and cultural usage. There will be an introduction and overview of key developments and current theories in the cultural sociology. Moreover, the main focus will be on presenting key analytical approaches to culture texts and practices, with the aim of giving students a "toolbox" to perform specific analysis of current cultural sociological issues, e.g. in studies of communities and cultural life, and how culture is expressed in lifestyle, selfrepresentation and identity. The course will focus on a variety of themes and topics.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the student shall:

  • know the central discussion and newer research in the Sociology of Culture in both Norwegian and international contexts.
  • know how to critically reflect on the changes brought about in the areas of culture.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • treat one of the themes addressed during instruction in an independent method through written work.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. If few students attend the course the two first weeeks of teaching, the course will be given as an individual study course with supervision. Please contact the departement for further information.
