About the course

Course content

The course will focus on the framework for cultural and media production and cultural and media usage. There will be an introduction and overview of key developments and current theories in the cultural and media sociology. Moreover, the main focus will be on to present key analytical approaches to culture and media texts and culture and media practices, with the aim of giving students a "toolbox" to perform specific analysis of current cultural and media sociological issues.

Learning outcome

Knowledge – the student shall:
* have an overview of the field and the ability to critically reflect on central theories, approaches, methods and research in the field (or fields) of Culture- and Media Sociology, within both national and international contexts.
* be able to participate in the development of new knowledge in Culture- and Media Sociology.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:
* be able to treat on of the themes which has been discussed in instruction in an independent manner through written work which is recognized to be at an internationally high level.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. The essay is to be an independent discussion of a topic taught in lectures, and is to consist of 20 pages.

If 6 or fewer students sign up for a planned course during the first 2 teaching weeks, the course will be offered as an instructed reading course.

Required previous knowledge

Master’s degree in Sociology or equivalent.
