About the course

Course content

The course explores history and society in the Spanish-speaking world.

A specific theme will be chosen for each semester. The subjects could be migration in the Spanish-speaking world, transatlantic relations, European and Latin American cooperation and integration models or contemporary topics in the Spanish-speaking world, including field studies related to the Spanish language.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE
The candidate:
- has advanced knowledge about a specific topic within the area of Spanish speaking culture, history and society.
- has knowledge of the subject area’s history, traditions, distinctive
character and place in society


SKILLS
The candidate:
- can communicate the acquired knowledge in Spanish, both in written assignments, in conversations and oral presentations
- can make use of expert knowledge in future jobs and further studies
- has obtained enough knowledge in the chosen topic to communicate with specialists in this academic field
- can apply knowledge to new areas within the academic field and stay informed

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate:
-is expected to have gained insight into source criticism
-is expected to be able to present an analytical reasoning
-is expected to be able to present and discuss problems, views and solutions, both orally and in writing
-is expected to be able to participate in a dialog on a general level with people from different academic backgrounds

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. The course demands a high degree of student activity, both through preparations at home and oral participation in lectures and seminars.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • 2 wirtten assignments (1000-1200 words each)
  • 1 oral exercise based on one of the written assignments

Further on evaluation

The written assignment should be 6-8 pages (2500-3000 words). The oral exam will be arranged after the students have submitted the written assignment. Date for oral exam will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

The written assignment and oral exam will not be given independent marks, and both must pass in order to complete the course successfully. Failing the course, means the student must repeat both parts of the exam (both written assessment and oral exam).
