Course content

The course presents perspectives on the role and use of foreign languages in Norway today: English, French, Spanish and German, and it will contribute to the students' understanding of the significance of foreign languages in Norwegian society and Norwegian culture. The course addresses issues such as the attitudes to (different) foreign languages, the learning of foreign languages, foreign languages in the professional life, as well as central areas such as language and identity and linguistic dominance and power, with current debates in the media and political discussion as a possible starting point. Areas of interest to the course include daily life, schools and higher education, public administration, industry and commerce, the literary field and media. The topics of the course may be explored from the perspective of linguistics, literature and cultural studies.

  • has an understanding of the connection between language and culture both in oral and written communication
  • has knowledge of the connection between language and identity, as well as dominance and power

The candidate

  • can argue for the importance of foreign language competence in different areas of society and discuss how it is reflected in practice
  • can explain different concepts and attitudes related to Norwegian language policy and multilingualism

The candidate

  • can explore issues in academic and professional contexts independently and in collaboration with others
  • can critically analyze, discuss, and reflect both orally and in writing

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, groups and discussion. Some of the teaching may be in English.

Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Compulsory assignments

  • 1 written assignment of 4-6 pages

Course materials

Reading list will be handed out at the start of the semester.
