Course - Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology - TBA4100
Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Geology
About
About the course
Course content
Description of soils and rocks for engineering purposes, formation of deposits, minerals and rocks, quartenary geology, engineering geology. Stresses and stress changes in soils. Soil stiffness parameters. Calculation of settlements under footings and embankments. Ground water regimes and flow of water through porous media.
Learning outcome
The subject shall give a broad introduction to geotechnical engineering and geology and give the skills needed to apply the knowledge in engineering calculations and analyses. Settlement calculations under foundations and embankment fills and seepage problems are covered. The subject shall also give an introduction to the formation, properties and behaviour of soils and rocks.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, assignments. Laboratory work and demonstrations. The assignments must be accepted to give admittance to exam. The assignments contribute with approximately 1/3 of the final grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Compulsory assignments
- Assignments, laboratory work
Recommended previous knowledge
No prerequisite.
