Geotechnical Engineering, Advanced Course
About
About the course
Course content
The course focuses on practical application of the finite element method in geotechnical engineering with emphasis on problem definition, input parameters and evaluation of results. Various elasto-plastic material models for soils are described, discussed and applied. The students shall in exercises run advanced numerical simulatioons of soil structure interaction. The exercises cover embankments on soft ground, foundations, supporting structures and examples from marine soil mechanics. Seepage, consolidation and time dependent settlements are included.
Learning outcome
In this course you will be able to develop, extend and apply the knowledge you have gained in previous courses in geotechnical engineering. The course aims at a strengthened theroretical platform, application of this to andvanced analyses and practical knowledge on relevant construction methods. The course is designed for those aiming at practical geotechnical design tasks and those who would like to do research.
Learning methods and activities
The course consists of a combination of lectures, tutoring in front of computers and exercises. The exercises shall be made by groups of two students where use of the computerprogram Plaxis is essential. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
