About the course

Course content

Technical-economical evaluation of building design alternatives, building detailing and selection of materials will be taught with respect to: Fire proofing, sound profing and acoustics, quality of indoor climate, technical installations, energy economy, durability and common building malfunctions etc. The subject uses CAD/BIM for design work. Some training in BIM will be given. Parts of the training and work in this course is carried out in collaboration with Faculty of Architecture and Fine Art.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The candidate should have knowledge of skills needed for practical design of complex buildings. This will result in ability to organise and participate in group work where different professional contributions are made, such as structural design, fire proofing, sound insulation, acoustic design, indoor climate control and energy consumption of buildings.

Skills:
The candidate is able to contribute in practical design of buildings in collaboration with architect students by taking on the role as consulting engineer.

General competance:
The candidate can, in collaboration with architects and engineers, contribute to design of buildings on the basis of improved knowledge of the society's needs and requirements to buildings in general.

Learning methods and activities

The activities of this course are all based on solving practical design tasks combined with some excersises. The subject is taught through traditional lectures as well as according to the principles of "Problem Based Learning". A comprehensive design task is carried out in collaboration with students studying architecture. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written exam (50%) and project works (50%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
