About the course

Course content

An introduction to time typical building techniques and construction methods from important epoaches as a basic for condition surveys of with different purpose within management of construction works.
Introduction to renovation and refurbishment: challenges, processes and requirements linked to renovation and refurbishment of existing buildings with a focus on energytechnical solutions in a life-cycle perspective.
Other central topics are strategic, tactic and operational matter considering organization of Facilities Management (Management, Operation, Maintenance, Development, Service; MOMDS). The course also gives an introduction to analytical methods, benchmarking tools and the laws and regulations relevant for renovation, refurbishing and management of buildings.

Learning outcome

The course gives basic knowledge about:
- Ancient construction methods, building traditions, former legislation, and challenges related to alteration of existing buildings.
- Technical and economic conditions and methods for management, operations and maintenance of existing buildings.
- Methods for reconstruction and development of buildings
- Methods and regulations relating to energy, environment and waste.
- Fire protection and Universal design.

The course shall give the student practical skills in:
- Ability to perform condition surveys and life cycle calculations of existing buildings.
- Use of analytical methods, tools and legislation that are relevant to refurbishment, reconstruction and management of buildings.

The course shall give the student general knowledge of:
- Understanding of the principles for sustainable preservation and development of existing buildings.
- Knowledge about tools and methods for technically, environmentally and socially sound management and development of buildings.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. A practical obligatoric assignment that is to be done in groups of 4-5 persons. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a written exam (67%) and a written assignment (33%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Course materials

Reports and articles, choice of text books in english and Norwegian, Byggforsk knowledge system, standards and reports for condition surveys of construction work, guideline for life cycle costs calculations, key figures, MOMDS directions and documentation. English speaking students will be given a selection of literature for the course.
