Course content

This course is an introduction to buildings in a life cycle perspective focusing on special technical challenges in
refurbishment projects like condition survey, cost calculation, tender documents, load bearing capacity, foundation, building techniques and consequences of the building physics. We introduce assessment analysis of building performance to minimize the gap between their potential and regulations.
We also introduce the facilities management’s (FM) role in refurbishment.

Learning outcome

The course shall give in depth knowledge about refurbishment processes and principals for sustainable refurbishment processes, cost calculations and execution processes, relaying foundations, exchange of load bearing constructions, protected cultural buildings as well as special knowledge about fire, universal design and building physics in existing building stock.
- Methodology and tools to analyse a buildings potential to develop and refurbish according to the regulations of today.

The course shall give the student practical skills to apply assessment methodologies and tools and regulation in order to assess and get familiar with the property of the building before refurbishing the building.

The course shall give the students general knowledge of the principals of sustainable protection and development of existing building stock included cultural heritage buildings.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. A practical obligatory assignment that is to be done in groups of 4-5 persons.

Further on evaluation

Project work in groups account for 55 % of the grade and an individual assignment account for 45 % of the grade. Both parts of the assessment are given a letter grade and both parts needs to be passed in order to pass the course. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.

Reports and articles, choice of text books in English and Norwegian, Knowledge papers from Sintef Byggforsk knowledge systems, standards
and reports for condition surveys of construction work, guideline for life cycle costs calculations, key figures. English speaking students will be given a selection of literature for the course.
