Course content

The subject will focus on the basic principles of highway design, road geometry and alignment, cross-section design, climatic and environmental factors, aesthetics and adaptation to surroundings.

Learning outcome

Students will have knowledge of:
- Basic principles of planning and design of roads.
- Alignment, road aesthetics and adaptation to the environment.
- Understand the road building process within the context of laws and regulations, and the role of stakeholders.

Students will be able to:
- Construct a road with good adaptation to the environment
- Implement geometric planning of roads using engineering tools.

Students will:
- Apply basic principles for the design of roads within the context of a design problem
- Assess the environmental impacts of location and design of roads
- Prepare detailed plans for such infrastructure elements.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises. The lectures are given in English, but the curriculum is in Norwegian.

Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written exam (70%) and exercises (30%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
