Course content
Geometric design, speed optimisation, vehicle ride comfort, track irregularities and damage mechanisms, derailment safety, structural design, interaction between rolling stock and track, risk and reliability.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- traffic loading estimates and structural design methods for track superstructure
- interaction between rolling stock and the track
- new developments of tracks for high speed train
- the dynamic properties of track components.
Skills:
- perform geometric design of track alignment by use of computer tools such as NovaPoint software
- make speed calculations on the basis of track geometry and train parameters
- design the track superstructure and select appropriate track components
- select proper ballast material and ballast gradation.
General competence:
- the principles for geometric design of railway tracks
- understand the railway system at the different levels and appreciate the different professional skills needed
- good judgment of track superstructure layer thickness and components material selection
- design the track alignment using computer tools.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures organized in a series of seminars by several teachers combined with individual and group exercises.
If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
