About the course

Course content

Geometric road design, cross-section and alignment of roads, calculation of volumes and costs, methods for asphalt mixture design, bituminous binders, methods for structural design, bearing capacity, strengthening.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
- Highway planning -Asphalt binders and mix design methods
- Loads and structural design methods for pavements.

Skills:
- Perform geometric design of roads by the NovaPoint software
- Make a professional choice of asphalt binder
- Use different methods to perform asphalt mix design
- Perform structural design of roads to withstand traffic and climatic loads.

General competence:
- The principles for geometric design of roads and streets, and is thereby able to prepare detailed plans for such infrastructure elements
- Understand the data flow between different planning levels
- Perform reasonable material choices for different pavement layers/elements
- Perform structural design of pavements to withstand today's and future changes of climate and traffic.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures combined with individual and group exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when non-Norwegian speaking students follow the subject. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
