About

About the course

Course content

The course provides individually tailored instruction within the student’s own craft discipline, with strong emphasis on independent work, reflection, and planning. The focus is on practical craft execution and technique, craft-specific themes, tools and materials, among other aspects.

The course emphasizes in-depth study of clearly delimited aspects of the craft discipline. During the semester, students are required to participate in organized sessions and complete a practical project.

Learning methods and activities

Practical, project-based work conducted at a designated learning arena, with professional supervision and reporting of completed work. The work may also include, to varying degrees, independent work, excursions, fieldwork, placements, or work seminars.

Learning Arena Activities

Through participation and instruction under supervision at a learning arena, students shall acquire broad and versatile insight into practical work within traditional building crafts. The learning arenas are external institutions with which NTNU has established formal agreements.

Students will be assigned to learning arenas based on their craft background and place of residence and will work on a project addressing a clearly defined theme related to their craft discipline.

The course is one of several courses within the category Specialized Practical Training, and its content may vary from year to year and between craft disciplines. The courses are project-based, and the structure must be adapted to the prior knowledge of the specific student group, the projects available at the learning arena, and the specialized expertise of the supervisors involved.

In cooperation with supervisors and with support from NTNU, the learning arenas shall prepare a discipline-specific teaching plan and project plan, which must be approved by NTNU.

Supervisors working at the learning arena may be either employed by or contracted by the learning arena. All supervisors must be approved by NTNU.

Compulsory assignments

  • Obligatory active participation in practical work
  • Obligatory written report

Further on evaluation

The course concludes with an assessment of a practical work, graded on a letter scale from A to F. The assessed work shall be carried out as a time-limited practical examination, with a maximum duration of one working day, and with an appropriate preparation period.

The foundation for the assessment is:

The prepared materials and tools, the execution of the work, conversations and questions with the sensor during the examination, as well as the finished product.

The form of assessment must be clearly specified in the project plan.

In the event of failure, invalid absence, or voluntary retake, a new assessment may be undertaken no earlier than the next scheduled examination period.

Required previous knowledge

Applicants must have general university admission certification and a relevant trade or journeyman’s certificate, or equivalent competence. Applicants without general university admission certification may apply on the basis of prior learning and relevant experience.

Course materials

Adapted to the individual project plan. Materials and tools are provided by the learning arena. Objects produced by the student as part of the practical training remain the property of the institution, unless otherwise specifically agreed with the student.
