About
About the course
Course content
The construction industry is a major consumer of materials. A significant portion of the volume is used in various types of buildings. Therefore, a structural engineer must have a good understanding of building materials, their key properties, and how they are used in buildings. This is related to the components that make up a building structure. The course thus provides an introduction to building technology and the most important building materials.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The candidate will learn the basic theory of important building and construction materials. This includes the composition, production, structure, properties, function, and applications of the materials in buildings. Furthermore, the candidate will learn how climatic stresses affect the choice of materials and the design of building components, as well as the execution of building envelopes and details.
Skills: The candidate should be able to make sensible and well-founded material choices and to develop and quality-assure relevant building details for building envelopes.
General Competence: The candidate should understand how material properties important in an engineering context can be related to the characteristics of the material. The candidate should have the ability to understand technical drawings. The candidate will be introduced to technical terminology.
Digital Competence: Basic skills in Python (simple calculations, plotting graphs) and in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software.
Sustainability Competence: The course contributes to providing students with a foundation for assessing building technical solutions and material choices from a sustainability perspective.
