Course content

Processes and methods for design and operation of treatment systems, resource recovery for water and wastewater, drinking water distribution systems and waste water collection systems, including stormwater. The components of distribution and collection systems, water needs, composition of wastewater, drinking water quality, disinfection, effluent water quality, quality and environmental hygiene, process theory for water and wastewater, and selected methods for treatment of drinking water and wastewater.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The course gives students an introduction to the basic theories for water, wastewater, and stormwater as needed for urban infrastructure. Water and wastewater systems, stormwater calculations, treatment of drinking water and wastewater, applying a selected set of methods for design and analysis.

Students will gain knowledge in:

  • demand for water supply to households, industry and public services
  • the components of water supply systems from source to recipient
  • the components in wastewater collection systems for both combined and separate systems
  • urban hydrology and relationships between precipitation and runoff
  • process theory for water and wastewater treatment
  • characteristics of waste water (amount and composition)
  • regulations for drinking water quality and effluent quality
  • methods for treatment of water and waste water

Skills

  • calculate the demand needs for water supply to households, industry and public services
  • calculations on the components of water supply systems
  • calculations on the components in wastewater collection systems for both combined and separate systems
  • calculate max runoff, construct hydrography, and calculate the effect of lands changes on the runoff peaks and volumes.
  • calculate reaction kinetics, reaction rates, volume, and residence time for processes for water and wastewater treatment.
  • characteristics of waste water (amount and composition)
  • regulations for drinking water quality and effluent quality
  • methods for treatment of water and waste water

General competence

Students demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for design, components and methods for water infrastructure, treatment and resource recovery for water and waste water.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, portfolio assessment, and a final exam

Further on evaluation

The examination in this course has two components; one written school exam for 40% of the grade and a set of "expert panel" works submitted as a portfolio evaluation for 60% of the grade.

Only the written exam can be retaken in the resit-exam period. In case of a resit exam for the written exam ("kontinuasjonseksamen") may be changed to an oral exam.
