Course content

Concepts and techniques for system adminstration of large and complex IT-systems. Documentation. Upgrades and maintenance windows. Change management. Scalability. Redundancy. Sentralization. Name spaces. Automatization. Finding and fixing errors. Computer centres. Asset management. ITIL. Etics and privacy. Disaster recovery. Security. Installation systems. User administration. Resource balancing. Physical infrastructure. Robustness and metrics to measure it. 24x7 system administration. Traceability. System monitoring. Monitoring and filtering logs. Handling of divergence. Single-point-of-failure. Backup. Hetergenous systems. Phasing out old solutions.

Learning outcome

The course gives knowlegde about the most common concepts and techniques used to plan and administrer large and complex computer systems/computer centers in a professional context.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, written exercises, one large, common exercise. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes written exam (75%) and a multistage, groupwise term exercise (25%). The course also includes an obligatory essay, which is not assigned a letter grade. The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
