About the course

Course content

In TEGN1100 students will acquire basic skills in Norwegian Sign Language, enabling them to conduct simple conversations on everyday themes. Focus is on developing basic skills in communicating in Norwegian Sign Language by acquiring a set of basic signs and grammatical structures in order to be able to construct simple utterances. Students are also introduced to the different manual alphabets, and number and counting systems used in Norwegian Sign Language. Central in TEGN1100 is to learn strategies to communicate and interact on visual conditions.

Learning outcome

Candidates

- have knowledge about different strategies for visual communication

- have knowledge about different manual alphabets, and number and counting systems used in Norwegian Sign Language

- can use simple sentence patterns and phrases they have learnt to conduct simple conversations on central everyday themes such as family, background, education, studying and leisure interests

- has basic skills in using manual alphabets and number signs

- can understand the most frequent sign vocabulary and common phrases regarding central everyday themes

Learning methods and activities

  • Communication exercises, to understand and produce Norwegian Sign Language. Log writing. Participation in recommended signed language arenas in Trondheim.
  • 80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher).
  • Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

  • A text describing the student`s language acquisition and development
  • 80% compulsory attendance

Further on evaluation

Individual oral exam, a signed language dialogue (up to 10 minutes) between one student and one teacher. No examination aids allowed.

It is not possible for students who have passed the exam in TEGN1100 to retake the exam in a semester where this course is not taught. Students who did not pass the exam, or who did not complete the exam due to illness may submit the exam in a semester where this course is not taught; however, they will not receive any supervision.

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language, the one-year program in Norwegian Sign Language or the Teachers' Training Program.
