About
About the course
Course content
Oscillations: Undamped, damped, forced single and coupled oscillations. Resonance. Wave physics: Description of waves, harmonic waves, general wave equation, elastic waves, phase velocity and group velocity, Doppler effect, electromagnetic waves, transmission and reflection, interference, diffraction. Theory of relativity: Einstein's special theory of relativity. Experimental methods in physics, methods for measuring physical quantities, data acquisition and treatment.
Learning outcome
The student is expected to:
1. Obtain, through a combined theoretical and experimental approach to the subject, a fundamental understanding of wave phenomena and special relativity.
2. Learn how to analyze various problems in wave physics with mathematical methods involving differential and integral calculus, as well as ICT-based/numerical methods by using Matlab.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, compulsory laboratory and calculation exercises. A compulsory lab report counts 10% of the final grade. A re-sit examination may be changed from written to oral.
Compulsory assignments
- Laboratory exercises
 - Calculation exercises
