About

About the course

Course content

Constraints and generalized coordinates. Virtual displacements, Lagange's equations. Variational calculus, Hamilton's principle. Lagrangian for particle in electromagnetic field. Constants of motion, symmetry properties. Virial theorem. Central forces, scattering. Elements of the kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies. Special relativity. Normal coordinates. Hamilton's equations. Canonical transformations.

Learning outcome

The subject gives an introduction to classical mechanics. This forms a basis for more advanced topics within physics and mechanics.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Course materials

H. Goldstein, C. Poole and J. Safko: Classical Mechanics, 3. ed. 2002, plus compendium (in Norwegian).
