Course content

Main topics are distribution of different types of soil onshore and offshore Norway, origin, stability, weathering, environmental issues, construction materials, area planning.

Learning outcome

Ingress:
To give the students detailed knowledge of the sediment genesis and distribution in selected areas and their properties as building sites and raw material.

Knowledge:
This course aims to give the students a deeper understanding of the genesis of sediments, and their geological and technical properties. In addition, the students should understand landslides, stability of sediments, and sediments as a resource. The students should develop skills to perform advanced evaluations and analyses of sediments, and to understand the importance of sedimentary geological properties for complex projects.

Skills:
Based on lectures and exercises the students should have deeper understanding of sediments, and the importance of sedimentary properties in engineering geological projects. The students should be able to select and perform geological analyses in the laboratory and in the field. After the course, students should be able to interpret the genesis of sediments based on elementary geological data, and to evaluate the properties of sediments (e.g. grain size, thickness, stability).

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, colloquium, and compulsory field work (2 field trips). The exercises include a written literature project. The mark from the literature project counts 20% of the final grade. The exam can be changed from written to oral at the postponed exams (continuation exam).
