About

About the course

Course content

Theory of elasticity: Stresses and equilibrium, strains and compatibility, material law, and strain energy. Energy methods: the principle of virtual work, the principle of stationary potential energy, and Rayleigh-Ritz's method. Beam theory. Beams on elastic foundation. Theory of plates in stretching and bending. Application of Rayleigh-Ritz's method for beams and plates. Stress analysis of plates with the finite element method.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidate should be able to explain basic elements in plate theory (stretching and bending), and explain how analytic and numeric methods are used in the analysis of plate problems. Skills: The candidate should be able to perform strength analyzes of plate structures (stretching and bending) using the finite element method and be able to control the results by analytical considerations. General competence: The candidate should be able to explain and critically discuss the use of the finite element method in the analysis of structures.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and mandatory exercises. Use of digital tools such as Python and finite element codes is emphasized in the exercises.

Compulsory assignments

  • Exercises

Further on evaluation

If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
