About

About the course

Course content

Principles of strucural design and material properties. Limit-state conditions, stress-strain relations. Ultimate limit-state capacities with respect to uniaxial loading, bending and shear: columns, beams, plates. Deformations, creep, shrinkage and crack-width calculations in Service limit state. Slenderness, calculation of 2. order moments in columns. Design of foundations.

Learning outcome

The subject offers basic knowledge about design of simple concrete structures, and theoretical background for the regulations in Eurocode2.
Concrete Structures 1 is the first design course within design of concrete structures. The course presents the theoretical background for the methods of analysis and design as implemented in the design codes for reinforced concrete structures, for the time being Eurocode 2. Concrete Structures 1 has these learning objectives:

Knowledge:
- Mechanical behaviour of concrete and reinforcement steel under short- and long term loading
- Design and resistance in ultimate limit state forelement subjected to axial and shear forces, bending and torional moments and combination of these
- Design of slender columns with second order effects
- Calculation and controll of displacements and crack widths in serviceability limit state
- Detailing of different concrete memebers.

Skills:
- Design beams subjected to shear force, bending and torsional moments
- Design slabs for bending moment and shear force
- Design columns i frame structures for 1.- and 2. order actions
- Control anchoring capacity of reinforcement
- Calculate displacements and crack widths in slabs and beams including creep and shrinkage in the concrete.

General competence:
- Design of simple concrete structures subjected to static loading according to Eurocode 2.

Learning methods and activities
