Learning outcome

Knowledge:
An MSc candidate has knowledge of:
- Methodology for design projects.
- Techniques for creativity and generation of solutions.
- Function, organ and component as basic product model.
- Basic machine design.
- Application of mechanics in machine design.

Skills:
An MSc candidate can:
- Complete a design project based on given requirements.
- Create original solutions based on given requirements and wishes.
- Determine structural dimensions in relation to the loads
- Make effective models of chosen solutions and use them in the projects.
- Build a prototype with the right properties to demonstrate chosen concept and chosen solutions.

General competence:
An MSc candidate can:
- Take part in creative processes and find original solutions.
- Realize solutions in virtual and physical models.
- Complete projects within given frames regarding time and resources.

Learning methods and activities

The course is centered on development of an actual technical product, for instance a bicycle with special requirements. This is the theme of a development project. Function, user requirements, production, aerodynamics and propulsion machinery should be considered in the project. Prototypes will be made and forces influencing the bicycle in use will be analyzed. The course has one line of lectures on product development methodology, one line of exercises and project work, and one line of support lectures in relevant, adjacent subjects. Grade is based on the result of the project work. If significant differences in the contributions from group members have been documented, individual adjustment of final grading may be considered.
