About the course

Course content

Relations between material structures and properties for polymers and composites. The mechanical and thermal properties of thermoplastics, thermosets and composites based on glass, carbon, and aramide fibres. Theory and application of material models including viscoelastic, rubber elastic and anisotropic material models. Basics of laminate theory and its application. Damage mechanisms, damage analysis, and analysis methods for simple structures such as plates, beams and tubular structures. Forming, processing and production methods. Material selection and engineering principles of polymers and composites.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The candidate has basic knowledge of:
The properties of polymers and composites, the common application of such materials and the engineering principles including material selection, fundamental relations, analysis methods and production methods.

Skills:
The candidate can do basic engineering of components and products made of polymers and composites. The candidate can do preliminary material selection, material evaluation, simple mechanical analysis and failure analysis using fundamental relations for the materials and structures. The candidate can suggest and evaluate relevant production methods.

General competence:
The candidate is able to communicate technology related to polymer and composite materials within a project and is able to answer general feasibility questions related to these materials.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and demonstrations including basic material testing. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
