About the course

Course content

The subject consists of four integrated themes. The first one is an introduction to tne Norwegian marine activities, including a description of the ocean and marine resources, the marine industrial cluster such as offshore oil production, shipping, fisheries and aquaculture. Also included is an overview of laws and regulations in the marine field,as vell as the systems for marine resource management. The subject further describes the application of marine techology in vessels and offshore activities. The second theme provides insight into sentral phenomena in the marine world, by introducing the students to physical experiments in the student laboratory, by excursions to a variety of companies in the marine field as vell as a day trip on the coastal express steamer where groups of students study a variety of shipboard systems. The third theme provides some introductory knowledge of laboratory experiments on drag and analysis of results by use of Matlab. The fourth theme focuses on study techniques, communication, report writing, oral presentation, techical drawing.

Learning outcome

The subjects Marine Technology Introduction and Marine Technology 1, 2 and 3 shall together enable the students to describe and understand the basics of marine technology and carry out engineering tasks related to design, construction and operation of marine systems such as ships, other vehicles, offshore platforms and other marine systems. In addition they shall give the students a proper set of tools and methods for carrying out such work and training in the skills of communication and teamwork.
Marin Technology Introduction aims at providing basic insight and practical understanding of marine technology and the marine field in general, as well as educating the students in the language of engineering communication, oral communication, report writing, sketching and drawing.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, labwork, drafting assignments and presentations to be carried out as teamwork. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes an oral exam (60%) and exercises (40%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. All lectures and activites are in Norwegian, and students must speak fluent Norwegian.
