Course - Design of Marine Vehicle - TMR4150
Design of Marine Vehicle
About
About the course
Course content
Groups of students carry out and coordinate a complete detailed design of a vessel on the basis of an approved specification. The work include preparation of drawings and specification of the vessel as a whole as well as ship systems such as hull, superstructure, cargo hold, cargo handling systems, main and auxiliary machinery, propulsion and manoeuvring systems, deck- and mooring equipment as well as accommodation. Students with good result may through this course get the opportunity to participate in an international design competition. Designs submitted will be commented on by a committee appointed by the institution.
Learning outcome
After having completed the course the students shall be able to carry out a design task within a given time limit and in a joint effort with members of a team that has been established in order to carry out the design.
This includes to
- Write an owners specification of the vehicle to be designed, get it approved, and use it as basis of the design work,
- Contribute to the planning and organizing of tasks among the team members including a mutual follow up and orientation of the work progress of individual team members,
- As a member of the team, put forward a documentation contained in an edited report where design work and design are described in text and drawings and by calculations,
- Establish contact with an English speaking institution in order to be informed on how to report on the work and other important information,
- Participate in team work including calculations of mass, stability, trim, propulsion resistance, cargo capacity and other relevant features of the designed vehicle, and also select methods and basis for the calculations. Select and calculate suitable measure of merit, such as required freight rate
- Develop he main dimensions of the vehicle, its compartment subdivision, draft and stability,
- Determine required power of propulsion- and auxiliary machinery.
Learning methods and activities
The work is carried out as teams of 2-6 participants in each group. Tutoring through informal discussions and comments on draft calculations, drawings and text.
