  • common application like e-mail and web
  • fundamental priciples for computer communication like packet switching and the layered protocol stack
  • important protocols like TCP, IP, HTTP, POP, DHCP and DNS c
  • communication ship to shore like mobile broadband and satellite
  • tools for verification and troubleshooting like ping, traceroute, nslookup and netstat
  • cybercrime and information security

Learning outcome

Knowledge

  • understand and be able to use key concepts within the field of information technology
  • explain how computer networks are built
  • explain the function of common components in maritime computer networks
  • identify current threats to information security

Skills

  • be able to identify common components in computer networks for ships
  • assemble and configure a simple computer network
  • use common diagnostic tools for verification and troubleshooting on computer networks
  • ensure basic security on personal devices and services

Competence

  • understand the importance of well-functioning information systems for the efficient operation of ships
  • see the opportunities that ICT provides for innovation and improved sustainability in the shipping industry
  • have an understanding of the importance of precise use of terminology in interdisciplinary communication
  • be able to communicate with professionals in data and communication in Norwegian and English

Learning methods and activities

Pedagogical methods: Lectures, exercises and lab assignments.

Mandatory work requirements: All mandatory lab assignments must be passed to gain admission to the exam.
