Course content

The subject covers relevant IMO requirements according to STCW 78 with addendum, table A-II/1, A-II/2,A-IV/2

Bridge Resource Management (BRM) and Search and Rescue (SAR) focusing on human factor in management/mentoring during planning and execution of search and rescue missions as well as management of SAR operations (OSC) and practical SAR exercises in a simulator.

Furthermore, the subject covers the use, control, maintenance of GMDSS subsystems and equipment MF/HF/VHF transmitters and receivers for telephony and telex, Digital Selective Calling (DSC). Satellite communication equipment (SES\'s), Emergency radio direction finding transmitters (EPIRB\'s), Radar transponders (SART), Power supplies, Antennas, Navtex. Setting and practical use and testing of the equipment.. Radio regulations that apply to the use of the aforementioned radio equipment. Publication. Expedition. Emergency and safety traffic.

Learning outcome

The subject covers the requirements for theoretical knowledge in STCW chapter II table A-II/1-2.

According to relevant parts of STCW 78 with additions, tables A-II/1 and A-II/2, the student must be able to:

Prepare:

Participation in and management of operations related to Search and Rescue (SAR) and Bridge Resource Management (BRM) in accordance with relevant parts of STCW Chapters II/1 and II/2 and STCW Code A-II/1and apply the terminology associated with regulations for maritime communication both in writing and orally in Norwegian and English in accordance with STCW chapter IV/2, STCW code A-IV/2 and IMO model course 1.25

Operations based on in-depth knowledge of protocols and procedures relevant to the structure and use of Norwegian and international maritime rescue services

Plan:

safe and efficient operations by using current international planning (IAMSAR Manual) as support in search and rescue operations.

relevant operations linked to the vessel's operation under all conditions

use of own, satellite and land-based electronic communication and navigation systems.

Perform:

Operasjoner on the basis of in-depth knowledge of protocols and procedures relevant to the structure and operation of Norwegian and international maritime rescue services.

Use, control and maintenance of the GMDSS subsystem and equipment regardless of speed range in accordance withRadio watch according to current principles and use current international planning (IAMSAR Manual) as support in search and rescue operations.Oral and written communication in English and being able to convey professional knowledge within the subject area to various target groupsGOC/GMDSS Certification from Telenor Maritim Radio and fulfill the associated requirements for this.Evaluate:

Which tools are best suited to secure the operation at all timesThe quality of own preparation, planning, implementation of operations related to the subject area as well as evaluation of these.The quality of information from analogue, visual and electronic communication aids and its content.The development of one's own professional skills in the subject and reflecting on one's own learningOwn experiences and participate actively in professional discussions with others and contribute to the development of good practice and learning quality.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, written and practical exercises, group assignments, simulator and radio training at school, homework, SAR (Search and Rescue) exercises.

Attendance at lectures and lab exercises is required.

Mandatory work requirements:

  • 80% attendance required.
  • Approved 3 SAR simulator exercises.
  • Passed oral and written work requirements from Telenor

The exam

  • 3 hours written examination (60%)
  • Practical Simulator Exam (40%)

New and postponed exams are held the following semester and can be changed to an oral exam.
