About the course

Course content

Seismic data acquisition. Energy sources, sensors and recording equipment. Seismic arrays. Spatial sampling. Seismic data processing. Data format and plot methods. Deconvolusion. Velocity analysis and stack. Traveltime calculations. Two-dimensional filters. Dip moveout. Wave Equation Migration. Three-dimensional seismic surveys. Processing of vertical seismic profiles.

Learning outcome

Ingress:
The students should know how seismic data are acquired, processed and exploited.

Knowledge:
The students should understand the basic principles of seismic data acquisition, and how to assess critical acquition parameters. They should know the most crucial steps in seismic processing, and finally know how the final processed data are used for exploration and production of hydrocarbons.

Skills:
The students should know how to derive and apply basic equations that are used in acquisition and processing of seismic data. they should know how to perform a simple processing of 2-dimensional seismic data.

General competence:
The students should understand the basic principles used in seismic imaging, and realize similarities and differences to for instance medical imaging techniques. They should learn how to use self critical analysis methods and to present scientific work to others.

Learning methods and activities

The course is intended for international MSc students in Tanzania. The course will be presented in Tanzania during a short time period. Lectures and exercises. The teaching is given in English, and the examination papers will be given in English only. If there is a re-sit examination, the assessment form may be changed from written to oral.
