Course content

Linear differential equations. State space representation. Transition matrix, decoupling, canonical forms. Linear approximations of nonlinear processes; linearisation. Block diagrams. Laplace transformation. Root loci. Responses for some typical processes--time- and frequency response. Stability of feedback systems, stability criteria. Frequency domain based synthesis of feedback systems: Servo control, process control with rejection of disturbances. P, PI, PID controllers, other serial controllers. Cascade control. Feedforward control. Basics of discrete (digital) control of continuous systems and digital filters.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
Basic knowledge about mathematical models of dynamic systems described by time differential equations. Know important terms like state-space, linearization, eigenvalues, Laplace transform, time response, frequency response, transfer function, block diagram, bode diagram, feedback systems. Know what characterize stability in linear systems, and methods to analyze stability in feedback systems with controllers. Be able to design/synthesize simple controllers for use on processes with known models. Be familiar with the most common controllers in industrial use.

Skills:
Be able to carry out small development projects independently and contribute actively in larger projects. Know how to analyze control issues and dynamic process properties. Design simple controllers and tune controller parameters. Have sufficient basic knowledge for more advanced control courses.

General competence:
Communicate about control-relevant issues both with specialists and the general public. Have conscious attitudes about how control systems interact with other both technical and non-technical systems.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, computer exercises and calculation exercises. There are eight calculation exercises, four of which have to be approved. Also three compulsory computer exercises in two-student groups, using MATLAB and Simulink. The course home page will be updated with summary of the lecture content. In addition, references to optional literature and some models and simple Matlab programs. Written exam. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
