Course content
The course gives a basic introduction to German syntax, morphology and phonetics.
Learning outcome
KNOWLEDGE
The candidate
-has knowledge of the relationship between the form and the syntactic function of phrasings
-has knowledge of the German word classes and is familiar with the German system of conjugation
-has knowledge of the German sound system
-is familiar with relevant terminology within German phonetics, morphology and syntax
-is familiar with grammatical differences between Norwegian and German
PROFICIENCY
The candidate
-can analyse simple German sentences in form and function
-can use constituent analysis to identify the different clauses in a German phrase
-can conjugate and systematically describe German nouns, adjectives, verbs and pronouns
-can use and systematically describe the German sound system through the International Phonetic Alphabet
-can use relevant grammars, dictionaries and reference books
GENERAL COMPETENCE
The candidate
-can reflect on central linguistic differences between Norwegian and German and make practical use of this both orally and in writing
Learning methods and activities
Lectures with discussions and assignments.
Compulsory assignments
- Oral test in phonetics (ca 15 minutes)
- Online grammar exercise
Recommended previous knowledge
German from Norwegian "videregående skole" (Upper secondary school) grade 4 or better, or knowledge of German equivalent to level B1 or better according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is required.
