TØL4206 - Aluminum and light metals

Course content

- The role of aluminium in automotive industry - Aluminium alloys and their respective properties and applications- Manufacturing and processing - Forging, casting, welding and extrusion - Heat treatment, natural and artificial aging - Thermomechanical treatment - Deformation hardening- Physical properties: - Phases and phase diagrams - Grain structure - Crystal structure - Hardening mechanisms at micro- and nano level (precipitation) - Surface properties (corrosion)- Mechanical properties - Stress and strain - Fatigue - Creep- Modeling and FEM analysis of process conditions in forming of aluminium and other light metals- Recycling- Other light metals (magnesium, titanium)

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the student is supposed to:Knowledge:- Have a wide general knowledge of important applications, production, processing methods and physical and mechanical properties of aluminium alloys.- Be able to explain how various manufacturing processes affect the material properties of aluminium and other light metals, and be able to determine optimum conditions in industrial applications of the processes through an analysis approach.- Be able to explain the role alloying elements play in affecting physical and mechanical properties of aluminium alloys, and put this in context with their application areas.- Be able to explain the role of experiments, modelling and simulations in research on both manufacturing processes and material properties of aluminium alloys - Have knowledge on some modern development features in applications of aluminium and other light metalsSkills: - Know how to use modern data assisted methods for optimizing forming and casting processes of aluminium on the concept stage before manufacture of a part.- Be able to reflect upon his or her own professional practice- Be able to find, read and analyze scientific publications and to describe results from scientific articles within the subject of the course.General competence:- Be able to suggest and exchange views and experiences to a problem within a project within the subjects of the course, and carry out the project either individually or in a group.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, tutoring, e-Learning, project work, group work.The course will be made accessible for both on-campus and remote students. The lectures in the course will be given on campus and are open for both categories of students. The lectures will be streamed and recorded and the recordings will be available on internet through NTNU’s learning management system. Tutoring are given at campus in accordance to announced times. In case of less than 4 students, the course will be based on self-study.

Further on evaluation

Re-sit examination: new oral examination (next August).Students must pass the project work to be allowed to present themselves for the oral examination.Students must pass both parts to pass the course.
