UL6003 - Doppler Ultrasound in Obstetrics


Course content

Focus is on Doppler ultrasound in obstetrics, maternal and fetal vessels, including the fetal heart.

Ultrasound physics, including Doppler ultrasound, ultrasound equipment functions, examination techniques, fetal-maternal circulation and physiology, clinical Doppler ultrasound, embryology and anatomy of the fetal heart, ultrasound examination of the fetal heart including Doppler ultrasound, diagnosis of congenital heart defects, prenatal and postnatal follow-up of congenital heart defects.

Learning outcome

After completed education the student has gained competence in the practical performance and the clinical assessment of Doppler ultrasound on maternal and fetal vessels and during the fetal heart examination.

Knowledge: Explain the Doppler ultrasound method, including errors, pitfalls and safety aspects, demonstrate knowledge about the correct use of Doppler ultrasound, when to use and when not to use, during pregnancy. Identify risk groups and explain how Doppler ultrasound best can be used when presented With compromized pregnancies. Describe and explain normal and pathological findings in Doppler ultrasound.

Skills: Demonstrate correct use of Doppler ultrasound on maternal and fetal vessels and during the fetal heart examination: technique, safety aspects, interpretation and follow-up.

General competence: Analyze problems in risk pregnancies within your level of competency. Be aware of your area of responsibility, assess and document your own work.

Learning methods and activities

During the educational period the students meet three times at NTNU to receive theoretical education and practical training. The rest of the time the students practice at their home institutions and work on their obligatory subjects. The education is built on lectures, practical demonstrations in larger groups and practical training in smaller groups, and use of an ultrasound simulator (ScanTrainer). Theoretical knowledge and practical skills are assessed through the obligatory written subjects.

Specific conditions

Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Postgraduate Ultrasound Education for Midwives (MDULTRALYD)

Required previous knowledge

Nurse/midwives or gynecologists with basic training and education in obstetric ultrasound
