Course content

This course will focus on a specific body of cultural texts that are linked through a shared context or contexts - social, historical, ideological or intellectual. It will examine the text-context dialectic - the ways in which texts are formed by the context from which they emerge, and also the ways in which they react back upon this context. The texts involved may all be of the same type or they may be mixed.

More detailed information concerning the syllabus will be made available in the reading list at the start of the semester in which the course is taught.

- have insight into the mutual relationship between text and context.

- are able to explain how cultural texts are formed by and influence specific contexts.

- are able to write independent literary analysis in advanced English utilizing relevant secondary literary sources.

- can conduct research using digital tools.

- can engage in critical analysis of different cultural productions.

- can critically evaluate the credibility and relevance of different sources of knowledge.

- develop stronger oral and writing English skills.

- develop stronger cultural literacy skills.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures/seminars, discussions. Supervision. Students are required to use the course learning platform regularly.

Students should expect that this 7.5 credit course equates with approximately 10 hours of work per week, including teaching time.

Approved obligatory assignment is valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Compulsory assignments

  • Written work, approx. 2000 words/5 pages

The course is assessed by a written home examination (7 days), approx. 3000 words.
