Course content

Electrostatics, method of images, multipoles, electric fields in matter. Magnetostatics and magnetic fields in matter. Electromagnetic force and induction. Maxwell's equations. Conservation laws for charge, energy, momentum and angular momentum. Electromagnetic waves. Transfer matrix theory for thin films. Electromagnetic fields in waveguides. Potential theory and Gauge transformations. Radiation from dipoles and charges in motion. Theory of relativity.

Learning outcome

The course gives the student an introduction to the modelling and understanding of electromagnetic fields.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and problem solving. The final grade is based on a midterm (20%) and a final (80%) exam. A re-sit examination may be changed from written to oral.
