Course content
Dimensional analysis. Scaling. Perturbation analysis, dynamical models. Conservation laws. Applications from engineering and natural sciences. Case studies.
Learning outcome
The course aims to impart a knowledge of principles and methods for formulating and analyzing mathematical models of systems and processes from engineering and science.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and a modelling seminar in groups. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade awarded in the course. This portfolio comprises a written final examination (75%) and the modeling seminar (25%). The results for the constituent parts are to be given in %-points, while the grade for the whole portfolio (course grade) is given by the letter grading system. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
Recommended previous knowledge
TMA4100/05/10/15 Calculus 1/2/3/4 or similar courses. Beyond this, a basic knowledge of applied mathematics and physics is an advantage.
