About the course

Course content

The course covers the structure of modern IT-supported production systems. Process and operations planning: Descriptive methods, time study, standard time systems. Machine tools and automation: Machine tool structures, functions, features and principles of manufacturing systems design. Industrial robots: Structures and features. Computer Aided Manufacturing: The principles of computer numerical control (CNC), programming of CNC machine tools and industrial robots. Design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA): The relationship between design solutions and manufacturing cost, methods for DFMA analysis. Factory planning: Detail planning of workplaces and material flow. Ecology: Energy consumption in manufacturing, reuseability of materials and components, disassembly and recirculation of products.

Learning outcome

The course shall develop insight in the manufacturing equipment, machines and methods that are used in industrial and consumer goods manufacturing. It shall establish a foundation for the planning and operation of standard manufacturing processes.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, theoretical assignments, laboratory experiments. One part of the assignment work consist of a compulsory minprojects. This project counts 30% towards the final grade of the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Compulsory assignments

  • Theoretical and lab exercises and a miniproject

Course materials

Mikell P. Groover: Automation, Production systems, and Computer-Integrated manufacturing, Third Edition, Pearson Education, 2008, Terje K. Lien: Industrirobotteknikk, Tapir, 1993 (in Norwegian). Compendium on work studies and machine tool elements (in Norwegian).
