About the course

Course content

The course will contain a part on fundamentals of transducers, and of the signal processing and statistics involved in an acoustic measurement. The rest of the course will cover a range of typical measurement tasks in acoustics, ranging from sound radiation to room and building acoustics, marine acoustics, psychoacoustics and hearing.

Learning outcome

The course will give the student experience in using acoustic measurement methods and instrumentation.

Knowledge:
(1) To give a broad understanding of the underlying theory behind the common measurement tasks in acoustics.
(2) To give a deep understanding of the accuracy aspects as regards transducers, environment, and signal processing involved in acoustic measurement tasks.
(3) To get an overview of the available national and international standards for acoustic measurement tasks.

Skills:
(1) To be able to perform a standardized measurement according to an international standard and to write a report on the results.
(2) To be able to analyze the random and bias errors involved in an acoustic measurement task.

General competence:
(1) Cooperation with the aim of solving practical measurement tasks.
(2) To judge the quality of own measurement results.

Learning methods and activities

The course will have a list of laboratory exercises that cover a wide range of measurement tasks in acoustics. Students will have to choose six such exercises and for each, there will be lectures on the specific theory behind the measurement technique at hand. Furthermore, there will be preparatory exercises that must be done by the students before the actual lab. exercises is carried out. Preparatory exercises as well as a written lab report must be handed in, independently by each student, and this material will be the base for the final grade in the course. There will be no final exam. Laboratory exercises will to a large degree follow international standards, and will cover sound radiation, room and building acoustics, marine acoustics, psychoacoustics and hearing.
